Thoracic Duct PPT Summary

  1. The Thoracic Duct originates from the cisterna chyli in the abdomen, ascends through the thorax, and terminates at the junction of the left internal jugular and subclavian veins.
  2. It drains lymph from most of the body, except the right upper quadrant, which is drained by the right lymphatic duct.
  3. The duct passes through the posterior and superior mediastinum and crosses to the left at the T5 vertebra before reaching the root of the neck.
  4. Major tributaries include the left jugular, subclavian, and broncho-mediastinal trunks, draining lymph from the head, neck, upper limb, and thoracic structures.
  5. Chylothorax can be caused by injuries to the Thoracic Duct, such as during surgery, while filarial infections can lead to obstructions like chyluria and hydrocele.
